I snagged a couple of tough VAM's today as well as landed another really nice VAM that is currently in a GTG in another thread.

@Cascade, @SuperDave, @messydesk this VAM thread is for you.

    Going in chronological order:

    First up an 1883-O

Up next a 1921-D Morgan Dollar.

Last but not least a 1922 Peace Dollar

That's the easy one. :) You got it. Now have fun going blind on the other two. LOL

I once had more than 150 raw 1921 Morgan dollars, but when they started attributing Scribbles, I sold all of them.

And, I was never interested in Peace dollars. The only one I have is a 1928-S that I got out of a slot machine at Cal-Neva in Reno.

You would do this on a day I'm opening. It'll be 4PM by the time I can look, and the fun will be done by then. :)

That's two down... That just leaves the 1922 Peace Dollar. :)

The Peace Dollar is interesting. I first noticed the collar clash on the reverse; Justin had to inform me of the die break at the ear via PM because there are no 1922's with both a break and a collar clash; once I saw the latter I never looked for anything else.

It's not a 2A Ear Ring. The die states don't develop in that order; on 2A by the time there's a break in the lowest strand of the hair, the ones above and below it are already prominent. And 2A doesn't have a known collar clash, or the circular crack thru the neck.

I found nothing like it listed at VAMworld, either in the 1922-P detail pages or in the Die Breaks subpage.

Oh oh. We may have a nice Leroy candidate... @messydesk :)

I found the die break on the VAM page. You were getting close @SuperDave in the PM. ;)

Well, we've exceeded my ADHD-imposed limits on detail work with it; I cannot find one which brings all this together, at least on this night.

Not sure that the Peace dollar is VAM 2BB. Many have cracks in roughly the same spot, so VAM 2BB is probably a frequent misattribution of these things. The die break in the hair doesn't match others, so I'd be inclined to send it to Leroy. Perhaps also ask David Close on VAMWorld, since he's the main Peace dollar guy.

I would rather the thing was absolutely_certain before involving Leroy; he's busy enough as it is. Dr. Close ought to be involved first.

Jason, if you're not a participating member at VAMworld, this would be a good time to become one. :)

And join the SSDC while you're at it. ;)

That's a nice looking VAM-4, hopefully you were able to cherry pick it and not pay the ridiculous asking prices.

Well all of the VAM's were Cherrypick's. None of the dealers around here seem to care about VAM's unless they are listed on the label and are a MAJOR known one.

Both Morgan's were nailed pretty early on. The 1883-O is a VAM-4 and is a PL. The 1921-D is the VAM-1O and was bought out of a junk tray along with the 1922 Peace Dollar. The 1922 Peace Dollar is a VAM-2DW. The 2DW pick up is the die break near the ear similar to the 2A Earing, but smaller. The clashing on the reverse is noted on the VAM-2DV.

Yup. 2DW obv break and neck crack seem to match up.

Nice picks Justin! I just wish I had a dealer around me, let alone multiple dealers...

Just added "lower hair" to the 1922 VAM page so that I don't miss this one with keyword searches again. Of course, it's also plain as day in the newer Peace dollar supplement that was underneath the one I picked up.
