I have found it impossible to find a truly FREE easy to use coin & banknote cataloguing software program in which you can add in your own coin information.

That coin & banknote programe that was posted by Derrick from Singapore is impossible to use.I tried it,only to find it impossible to modify to my requirements.

Obviously if it's free, there is always a catch. Otherwise, software programmers don't have any source of living.

Gxseries, have you tried to use that program that Derrick posted a link to? You will find that it is absolutely useless.I haven't the foggiest idea how he managed to use it.I certainly couldn't get the 'database' button to show up at all.

I've also got no idea how to use a spreadsheet programme either.I'm very out of touch with modern technology,as there was no such thing as the Internet in my younger days.

Personally no as I had a bit of programming. It does take a bit of time to play around with but I don't really need a database. I've shoved pictures and infomation into omnicoin which pretty much does the trick of what I need and happy of.

Aidan, I don't have any problem with the software. I think it serve most needs unless you have some very specific needs. I am quite confused as to what is your difficulties. Maybe you did not install it properly.

No, vBulletin is NOT open source - it's specifically proprietary if I am not mistaken. Peter does pay for this forum if I am not mistaken and it doesn't come cheap. No idea where you got the idea that this forum is free. Indeed it's free for us but not free for Peter.

I refuse to debate the greatness of open sources in here (as well as it's not the right place) but chances are that either one knows HOW to edit and / or customize it to one's preference OR simply have zero idea how to use it. Telling others who have zero experience in IT to use a new software is as fatal as "walk down the road unaided". Yes, you have 14 years - what good is it for people who have zero? I don't recommand ANY software unless I am ready to explain to anyone who have zero background with any softwares. I can assume that some had difficulties signing up this forum. It does seem trivial but not for everyone.

Personally if it's not user-friendly, I care zero about how great a software can be even if it's free. The very reason why I didn't really like the software. I do know some great open source programs but this isn't in one of my lists.

Moderators perhaps it's better for this thread to be moved to the "Support and Feedback" section.

Gxseries, have you found an open source coin cataloguing programme at all? I hate it when you come to a link & it says free to download, but it will cost you X or Y US$.To me,that is false advertising,as it isn't a free download.

to write a coin/cateloge program that is customizeable by the user to fit their needs, would take an exuberment ... well, a whole lot of time to write. All this effort by the programer would not come cheap, they would almost certianly have to sell it to cover expenses for writing it. anything less then fully customizeable by the end user to make the program 'free' would result in the application only being 'liked' and used by a smaller group of collectors who liked its 'static' layout.

Aidan Work, i feel for you bro, but if you want software that is free, but is very easy and you like.. i am afraid you will have to try a few dozen titles till you find one u like. If i find one i like, you might hate it. see323 found one he liked, and you disliked it.

In the end, software that is used by the masses, and liked by most - well, its never free =(

oh yeah -- and good luck =)

Well,in that case,I have been forced to give up.I would have liked to have started cataloguing my collection for personal purposes,& so that I would have had a record of what I have got so far.

    Aidan,

Don't be so quick to throw in the towel. If you don't mind your info on someone else's server then give numismaster a try at http://www.numismaster.com/. It's free as long as you don't subscribe to their price guides.

I would have provided a screen shot but it's 19k over the file size limit for this forum :(

    Hope it helps

Ken_3567,I was trying to find something to download onto my computer to customise to my own specifications,as I have some items that you won't find in either Krause or Pick.Numismaster has virtually nothing on world coins & banknotes at all.

Aidan, Coin Elite will inventory world coins & world currency but you have to pay for the program. Here's their web site if you want to take a look. www.trovesoftware.com

Don't loose hopes, Aidan (I can't believe that I am giving you this advice)

Well, I think the best software to meet your requirement is Microsoft Excel. Just plain vanilla version. So, you can decide how many coin attributes you need to store and use that many columns in datasheet. And start entering one coin information per row. It will take sometime but you will have complete inventory of your collection.

I think you probably are not looking for loading the images of your coins. So, this excel database should work for you.

Now in future, when you find a software which meets your requirement, you can import this excel datasheet in that software and you will be ready to go.

Personally, I use a custom build Microsoft Access database for keeping track of my collection. I have built my own user interface (pretty basic, but works for me) and some reports for this database and am pretty happy with it so far.

Actually, you can add images to an Excell worksheet quite easily. :)

You are right. However, it's not practical.

After attaching couple of hundred images, many computers will cry and may deny opening that spreadsheet.

What you do wih the data..

I've programmed a couple of data-based programs for the company I work for.

In general, getting the data in isn't the big problem. Of course, it's tedious but requires very little "programming". Unfortunately, a lot of people looking for "free" software also want it to come with pre-built tables containing mintages and attributes of tons and tons of coins/paper money, etc. THAT takes a lot of time and is virtually impossible for an individual to keep up to date (and for free too!!!).

But the big job of programming is the layout of your data and pretty printouts and reports. And of course, you should be able to pick out 2 or 5 or 10 or 100 attributes and they should all display and/or print out nicely.

If someone needed a program to collect mercury dimes in all variations with an agreed upon set of attributes and outputs, that piece of software could be written quite easily.

It's when you add the myriad options to allow the user to put in virtually anything that it becomes impossible or costly. Basically people want all the flexibility of an Excel, but that specializes in coins.

My advise is to take the time you spend searching for the magical free software and invest that time by studying Microsoft Access. It'll be time well-spent and you don't have to become a geek to get really cool results. Plus you'll also be able to apply it to home inventory, any other collections you have and you just might have developed a skill that will make you more marketable!

Access is not free .. it is part of the Microsoft Office suite... cost is always associated with a MS product ... if you find a free download link.. maybe posting it would nto be a good idea lol
