Is this clipped quarter real or not. I know there is suppose dto be some kind of effect that happens to the opposite side, but cannot remember. I think it is fake. What do you guys think? I am trying to get the obv.
That might be a good one. That effect your talking about is the Blakesley effect. It affects the rim formation opposite of the clip. There's something going on there on your coin. If you can try to get a pic of the edge opposite of the clip.
It may be a genuine example of a curved clip. Notice how the L in Pluribus is not completely filled? This could be due to the lack of metal at the clip area during the strike. Also, the rim opposite the clip is not struck up (Blakesly effect). Just because it shows these traits does make it genuine, but it points in the direction of genuine.
I sure as heck dunno, but my gut says it's real. If I were walking in your shoes, I'd invest the money to have it verified. If you (and I ) are mistaken, we've learned something. If you and I are correct, you've really got something! ---- I say you do. Go for it.
Also, The shape of the clip looks correct. Do you know the guy that is selling it? It means a lot if it is from a reputable dealer.
Check it out ---> This well written thread by Physics-Fan-3.141596 describes several of the technical nuances of the incomplete planchet error. http://www.cointalk.com/t77334/
The clip looks legitimate to me. As for the Blakeslee Effect, since the planchet is incomplete, the portion of the edge exactly opposite of the missing part of the planchet will not have a raised rim. The rim gets raised in the upsetting mill.
No, it is just a picture from a site in some catalog. I just think it might be something someone did in there own shop. You can make these your self can't you? I mean all you have to do it have a high pressure shearing device and cut it.
The clip looks right but the coin looks funny to me. The strike looks too strong and the feathers to detailed. Just not sure..
I was refering to the way that pictures can be doctored up in programs such as "paint" on your computer. Just throwing an uneducated opinion into the mix.....
It's definitely authentic. The pole opposite the clip shows the Blakesley effect and letters bordering the clip show metal flow.
I spoke with the owner of the coin in the OP picture.. I too think the coin is real. When I first seen the pics I had a few questions about it, they have been answered. The big thing here is the owner of this coin sells some coins that some of us seen back in the 60's and 70's. You know.. all the fancy colors, wavey lines, the psychedelic thing.. : )
