whats the science behind this? Penny Ball for the garden. Pennies in the garden repel slugs and make hydrangeas blue. Just glue them on and
The slugs is a new one on me but with the copper and zinc breaking down into a corrosion surface would have the same effect as any of the powder liquid garden preps. Yes the copper will make them blue, copper wire or pennies were at one time placed into the hole with the house sewer line to the street connection. it would kill roots from trees in the days before plastic pipe. Copper nails or a hand full of pennies buried in the roots of trees and bushes will kill them too. But the good old root killer that you pour into the toilet is faster at that job. It will also kill fish in ponds, in higher amounts, a lot of the tank medicine for home use is some version of a copper prep. Any small ball would work probably. the larger the more surface area to react to with the weather.
Yes to the slug, not so good with the plants. Might actually kill or cause them to be greenish. Aluminum is better if you want to add or change color to Hydrangeas. It's the ion in the metal than affect color. The copper in the cents create a sort of electrical shock than deter slugs. BTW, I work in the garden also.
When I was a kid planting fruit trees for my father (He recalls that as 'trees he planted' despite only my finger prints being on the shovel) we placed a short plastic container at the base of every tree and topped it off with beer (from dad's bottle being enjoyed during the grueling process of his planting activities). Next day they were slug sewers. Occasional refilling was the only maintenance required.
