posted this coin in one of my recent threads the feed back was it looked plated so i took some more pictures and gave it its own thread if its plated then the edge is also plated no copper color at all
Well, it's a '43 steel cent, so there wouldn't be any underlying copper, and the plating process covers the entire coin, edge included. Many, many of these 1943 cents have been electroplated with bright zinc or nickel, giving them this shiny appearance as opposed to the dull steel look that quickly overcame the original mint issues (google 1943 steel cent and look at the images; the uncirculated examples look entirely different from your coin). Many an entreprenuer has taken '43 steel cents, plated them for that "newly minted" look, placed them in plastic housings with a fancy inscription referring to "war time cents" and sold them for ridiculous prices. The coin you have is one of those plated examples, effectively destroying any numismatic value.
Plated for sure. When steel cents came from the mint, there was no plating on the edges. The blanks were punched from a strip of zinc plated steel. One more reason these things did not hold up in circulation.
Oh well i needed it for one of every type collection as ling as it is a steel then i guess it dont matter to me thanks guys
The steelies of 43 were in a sense plated. They were zinc coated steel planchets before being struck. This one; however, looks like it has something else plated on it after minting.
I have found chrome plated steel cents and even war nickels in circulation. Apparently this was done long after the fact for those back of magazine coin adverts.
