My mom showed me this coin that has been passed down to her by her father. She says its really old but a local coin/antique dealer told me it is fake. I wanted to know what you guys thought it was and if it is fake what coin is it trying to replicate?
    Thanks!

Looks like a fake of a late Republican denarius.

    The real coin is silver.

There ancient fakes however, but I kinda think this is modern.

An ancient fake would have been a fourree, but the copper core, (if this was it), would not have had that level of detail. IMHO its a 1950/60's cast replica.

Thanks for responses. So your saying these were made of silver? Or is there another way of telling ?

While certainly fake, the item tries to copy the 136BC denarius of C. Serveili M.F. written under the two horses on the reverse. Roma is under the head on the obverse. These legends are copied poorly. The edges are filed which always makes one wonder if someone is hiding something like a casting seam but these photos are poor enough that it is hard to say anything beyond that this coin has enough problems that there is no need to look too closely to say it is not official. I suspect it was made to be part of a 20th century charm bracelet but I can not explain why the legends were not copied as well as the types.

So does that mean I should get better pictures or does that mean I should not bother because its definitely fake and worthless.

It is always best to do the best we can to get the most accurate comments. In this case, I seriously doubt it will change anyone's opinion.
