I was wondering if this was post damage. It just looks like a strange damage to the coin since it only is damaged around the rim only
Hi, It's corrosion. When these coins are struck, sometimes the sharpness of the die cuts through the copper plating right at the edge of the field where it meets the rim. Zinc being very corrosive begins to corrode very quickly wherever it is exposed. I've seen thousands of cents like this. Have Fun, Bill
I agree about the corrosion Bill, but it looks like there is a groove there that is not supposed to be there.
Hi, The zinc begins to decompose and it raises the copper plating, that then corrodes further, creating that "groove" Have Fun, Bill
An encased coin is one that has been set into an outer ring of metal, usually as a memento or keepseek. You ever see a penny with a horseshoe around it and the words Good Luck around the outer edge ? CLICK HERE to see some examples.
