I,ve purchased this coin approxmatley 30 years ago , and I just took it out of it,s orgianal flip on 6/27/05 to photograph it for auction it is a 1886p morgan it has deep mirror finish with deep cameo obverse and reverse . I,m not a professional coin collector but this the finest coin I,ve seen (not bragging) But I don,t want to sell it if it,s not orginal to someone like me who don,t know better.
    Anyone know anything about this?
sorry guys I thought I uploaded pictures with this
OK I,ve tried 2 times to upload pictures of this coin can anyone tell me what I,m doing wrong? they,re uploading to somewhere but not on my thread.

    first

Before you auction it make sure that you dont have a proof there.

Many Morgan dollars come with what is called a Proof-Like surface. The best examples
have the surfaces you describe and are called Deep Mirror Proof-Like (DMPL).

Try getting some pictures uploaded again. There are a few Morgan varieties that are on the Top 100 list. They bring a slight premium in higher grades. My favorite is VAM 1A. It has a die gouge though the designer's initial (M under neck) that looks like an extra piece of Liberty's hair.

It appears to me that it does have a slight gouge there , maybe I ,ve got something real after all !!

1886 Morgan Has This One Been Tampered With?

Sorry if this is a repeat , but i,m trying to find out if my coin has been tampered with. I got this coin approxmatley 30 years ago from my uncle and has remained in the flip I got it in untill 6/27/05 when I removed it to photograph it . It has super nice mirror feilds and a deep cameo on obverse and reverse. I never seen one as nice as this one before. So nice I,m concerned that it may have been tampered with . I heard of acid and other treatments to make coins have a cameo appearance. Is there anyone that knows about this? If so HELP !!! I,ve tried twice to upload pictures of it I hope this time it works

It MAY be a proof...it does have a great strike....I tell you what...I'll take it off your hands and then you won't have to worry about it!!! J/K!

I would send it into get slabbed...if its not proof....its a high grade coin.

MAKE sure you don't drop it...and make sure you hold it by the RIM only (or the edge)

I certainly don't see any of the usual tell-tale signs of tampering, tooling, cleaning or brushing. :)

So far as I know there is no way to "create" mirrors on a coin other than through some form of polishing, which would leave definite signs around the edges of the design and legends, and would destroy any luster.

I wouldn't be prepared to buy it as a proof or proof-like business strike just from the pictures, but if I were a Morgan collector I would certainly want to see it in hand. ;)

By the way, I don't think I've welcomed you to the forum yet, so consider it done.

Thats ok Dave it,s going to PCGS next week :) does anyone have an opinion of what MS grade this coin will be? I have 23 ms 64-65,s this one out shines them all by a long shot. That,s why l was concerned about it . lt,s almost to perfect! lt may be on the auction block soon so if anyone's interisted l will post here

Thanks Roy l really do thank you for looking at this and giving me your honest opinion, l,ve been collecting coins for almost 35 years and never seen one like this before not even in my coin books or on internet . l know this is a rare coin . lt was my Grandfathers then passed to my Uncle then to me. lt really has alot of value to me because of family history so l never checked out the orginalty of it before because l didn,t want to sell, but now l have some medcial bills (my son's) l,ve got to take care of.l was hoping to pass it on to him one day , but that,s the way it go's.
Thanks Roy for the kind welcome to the club

Having looked at the obverse, I'd venture an opinion that PCGS isn't going to go over MS66 for your coin, if it's a business strike and not Prooflike. There's a mark on the lower cheek, and marks in the field in front of the face, both high-visibility areas which tend to detract from "eye appeal."

Then again, it wouldn't be the first time this week I'd undergraded a coin.

If this isn't a proof it's certainly PL, if not DMPL.

I wasn't going to hazard a guess - although the fields are beautiful, it's tough to see reflectivity in a photo unless the shot is specifically set up to show it. Either way, I'd be proud to own that coin.

Well l,m feeling alot better about this coin all the time
    PCGS bussiness strike MS66 $3250.00
    PCGS proof MS66 $12500.00
l looked at Hertiage auction site they are selling coins that are slabbed proof 66 / 67 for $20,000-$90.000 and they have very little luster at all some are downright gray in appearance. Anyway I,ll be sending this one off to be slabbed next week and then I will know for sure. Thanks alot guys all of you have been really helpfull

By all means submit the coin for grading. I can't say for sure that it isn't a Proof but I do not think it is. The coin is certainly very nice, but the marks it does have are in the prime focal areas and will limit the grade because of this. I would think the coin will grade MS64 PL.
