Hello all, new here and to coin collecting. It is an absolutely fascinating hobby! Sorry I have no way of posting a pic yet, but I stumbled onto a 1984 Lincoln that at first glance it looked like the D mintmark was above the date. Under 10x it looks more like a volcano shape. Is this collectable? What exactly is it?

since 1982 Lincoln Cents have been made of copper platerd zinc. What you are seeing is what happens when the copper plating gets nicked. The zinc starts to oxidiz and "erupts" through the plating. Sorry, this is damage and nothing more.

It actually looks like part of the strike. It is copper in color, not zinc. Would that be from a die gouge?

    Hello Zzyzzyth

Throw away, skip or spend every other cents ya find.

This one could be fun for years if you keep it or you find a better one.:cool:

If you enjoy it, collect it. That goes for anything.

As said earlier, it is almost certainly just a plating "blister" that are quite common especially on the "early" plated cents. You will be able to see the zinc if you break it open. Unless this is something you want to keep because it interests you, smash the blister and see what I mean.
