Is this crazy, or am I missing something?

This coin was in an auction the other day where I was watching other things. It was advertised as an error for the slanted mint mark. 1942D nickel. It does not look like the D over horizontal D based on the pic. It ended up going for a $95 winning bid which I could not understand at all. Seems pretty crazy to me.

I see people asking crazy sums of money for cents struck with worn dies. the ads call them "L in Rim"... And they are nothing more than an overused die!.... Sadly so many folks have bought into this "get rich quick with pocket change" scam that many will believe most anything these days. A sad statement on a great hobby is all I see.

Now the photo does look VERY similar to the 1942-D over horizontal D
in the NGC photo. In that case because of condition, it's not worth more than $50. If it is not the rare variety, you never know if something is being bid up by a shill bidder. If this coin just has an RPM it's worth a dollar max. Screenshot (120).png

It was at $30 when I saw it and all I could think was ‘what was going on?’ and after some bid extensions it went to $95. Unreal.

Most of the time they live on the bottom of the pond. They're called "Suckers".
