I'm looking at Franklin half dollars trying to get a feel for them because I would like one for my little type so I am working on and I came across this guy which I think has pretty cool toning based on the true view images. But I am more curious if this type of toning is considered 'attractive' and worth a premium for the general market, or just in my own world? Cool Toning = PCGS 83127916. These are some others that I also liked, curious as to the thoughts on these from eBay: 1. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1956-P-Fran...110952?hash=item3f80ef5fe8:g:MY0AAOSw241YVy9T 2. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-Frankl...877524?hash=item4d5cf27d94:g:sCEAAOSwHLNZSIeK 3. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1948-Frankl...317014?hash=item1a2edbf616:g:~loAAOSwEHpZJx-l 4. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1958-Frankl...427737&hash=item25d9b48311:g:UzEAAOSw~XpZUFz0 Looking at a 65 or 66 FBL - probably a 65. And from a Philadelphia mint. And a totally unrelated bonus 20 cent piece that has been listed for a long time... overpriced probably... http://www.ebay.com/itm/1876-P-Twen...982178?hash=item1ecab694e2:g:y8MAAOSw1WJZMLhH. Basically just looking for a little guidance. I promise this will be my last post for a while . Happy Fourth! USA
Here's the image since you didn't post a link. 1956 Franklin Half - MS65FBL Toning is really subjective... I personally find it attractive but there's enough spottiness going on in the fields to where I wouldn't pay a huge premium for it. Others might. In my world I'd be at about a bill for that coin... hopefully less but that applies to everything. Edit- Added grade.
Seems to me, a simple push of a button and you couldve added links to these auctions . Not many CTers (myself included) are gonna go thru the hoops of finding all these coins manually. As for the Franklin that Lunch Box John was kind enough to post 4 u, i am not a fan especially being '56 '57 '58 Franklins can be found regularly w nicer toning
I'll go back and add the links, I figured adding the links was an eye sore, give me a minute. Ok I added the links. Nice and easy now. And tried to make the post not look like an eye sore too.
+1 That coin looks like a luster bomb, and as such, seems a tick undergraded. I absolutely love the 20 center, if you can afford THAT coin, i say go 4 it!!
@Lunchbox John and @heavycam.monstervam, you are talking about the coin I have labeled 1 yes? Not the cool toner? It does look like a great one based on the pictures. And yeah id love that twenty center. I have an 1875 in VF 25 and I'd love a 76. I have to decide if it's in the cards right now .
Yeah, #1 with the subtle crescent toning. Which combined with blazing luster is cooler toning in my book.
I like the 1956 numbered 831... that Lunchbox John posted. Of the other 4 that you posted links to, the 1956, the 1952 and the 1958 are WAY overpriced for the quality of the toning and the coin. The 1948 has decent toning for the date/mm, but it's ridiculous what TPG's will put in 65 holders these days. As you might guess from looking at my avatar, I like toned Franklins. Here's a link to my toned Franklin business strike set. It was completed years ago (and rated as the # 16 set then), and only very rarely over the intervening years have I found a worthwhile upgrade. Before you look at the images, look at what the grades are/were. You'll see that quite a few of my coins are significantly under graded by today's standards, but as I have no interest in playing the Registry point game (my set is currently rated #23), or in selling the set anytime soon, I have no interest in reslabbing the suckers. https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetGallery.aspx?PeopleSetID=8611 One thing also to be VERY aware of these days is that there are a lot of AT Franklins out there. The ones that you have posted are all NT, which is says a lot about your ability. FWIW, if you are interested in finding a toned Philly Franklin, your best bet(s) would be ones from 1956, 1957 and 1958. Those are the best years for finding toned P mint Franklins. You can find some QUITE nice toners for not too much money.
Thanks for the response @Skyman! Hope you had a nice 4th. I like that 831 numbered one as well, I think it's pretty cool looking. It's something that I think I would see myself appreciating in a type set perhaps, but it's hard to know without holding it in person. To you point about prices - I did check the price guides and past sales and as per usual, these coins are listed more expensive than the price guide which is significantly above past sales. I see that you like toned Franklins, so you are probably a good guy to bother in my search for one ). You definitely have some really nice ones in that set. I think your 1951-D in 65FBL is absolutely gorgeous. That's like my ideal Franklin half I think. If only I could find one like that. Thank you. I have been following all the threads on the pcgs forums about artificial toning and market acceptable vs not and while I would not say I am an expert, it seems like there is a pretty stark line between NT and AT - a lot of the time you just know it when you see it based on how the colors go. Or so I hope. I did stick to slabs - are you seeing a lot of AT toned Franklins in straight graded slabs? Is there a particular reason why those 3 years are the best? Gosh if I could find any 65FBL Franklin that looks like your 1951-D... Is that a true 65 to you? Perhaps a 65+ today? The 66 on photograde looks a little more.
