I know nothing about mexican coins. if it was fake, for $10, its worth the price, to have the specimen in your collection.

But it is of absolutely no value in analyzing the one shown in the first post, as there were several varieties during that time span.

That said, I can't find a match for the design of the questioned one among the varieties shown in the Standard Catalog of World Coins 19th Century, 3rd Ed. (2001); so that source definitely does not confirm its reality.

    Sorry. :(

Legend is "X8 SPAN 1833 Mo 10 FC".

I don't know what that means.

I don't know much about mexican coins, but I have a suspicion this one may be fake. The detail on the reverse seems quite crude.

If you combine that "SPAN" with the o over M mintmark, it translates as "I am a Spanish coin minted in Mexico City a couple of decades after Mexico became an independent country." :p

To clarify my post. The original poster indicated they were not familiar with Mexican coinage, so I grabbed a quick example that I felt more typically represented the characteristics of an 8 Reale. It was not meant to be a comparison with the coin in question. I did not locate any example of any variety in Krause "Spain, Portugal and the New World" that exhibit the atypical nature of the lettering and images.

I would wait until one of the more knowledgeable posters weighs in.

    It sold for $26.
I believe the purchaser is a board member.

All you need to do is look at the date and legends - this is what a real one looks like.

The purchaser collects fakes and posts frequently on another site. He says this piece is "so wrong that it's fantastic". He believes it to be an old fake.

It's not necessary an old fake. Contemporary pieces were created to withstand the scrutiny of circulation. This piece, however, is so grossly wrong - i doubt it was meant to fool anyone.

    Just my 2 cents.

Do you have an image of your coin? Is it identical to the one in this thread? If it is, could you provide the seller's name? I am trying to track certain forgeries currently on EBay and would appreciate the info you can provide.

    Thanks,

    ~Roman
