    Since the coin is absolutely hideous, the origin of the toning is irrelevant. BTW, do you mean environmental damage?

    It appears to me that the coin came into contact with some unknown liquid. Now whether that contact was purely accidental or intentional - we have no way of knowing. But I don't think there is any way that the coin could be described as having natural toning.
