Is this coin an au-58 or an ms-60?

IMO...an AU. Definitely NOT a MS. Breast feathers are worn too.

NTC graded coins are terrible. They also dip a fair share of lincolns to make them look MS as well. These bozo's out of Boca Raton, Florida are NOT near any of the top TPG's. When I look at their coins, I automatically deduct 5 points for MS grades and 10 to 15 points for circulated coins.

Z-Man, it looks AU to me. Maybe 53 0r 55.

I thought it was as low as a 53-55, but I looked at some in pcgs holders that were graded 58, and this one looked as nice if not a little nicer. Perhaps just some bad grading by PCGS? I know some years they grade a little higher, but this doesn't seem like a weak strike year/mint mark.

This is one of those coins which has to be judged with it IN-HAND. I've also noticed some TPG coins appear to defy logic when it comes to the final grade.

AU55. One consideration is that, even given the perception of this coin as a rarity, it's not rare in AU. NGC alone has graded 3000 AU examples. My guess is this one's been dipped by an expert, but dipped all the same. Even if I'm not uncomfortable with a dipped coin, this one's dubious provenance would have me stopping at $200.

One thing I noted while perusing Heritage for this post was that very few are being slabbed as Cleaned, which makes me think that it's being overlooked for this issue. The TPG's know it's a cash cow.

It shows wear IMO....its a S mintmark but shows a "week strike" above the ear like a O...I think that might be wear.

that might be true about Morgans in General. Well cleaned coins are just being given a pass. You need to be looking at an obviously dulled coin for cleaning to stop grading (as I perusing the world of Morgans ;) ).

I agree with Speedy that it is a weak strike, AND shows wear, both on the breast on the reverse, and in the hair details on the obverse. No way I'd pay Unc money for this... not even a super nice AU in my opinion.

It's certainly worth the current bid price ($10.55 right now), but beyond that... well, it's not Mint State, so "you pay your money and you take your chances..."

That is what I don't get either....
The S mint coins have great strikes....so is this a week strike or is that more wear....if that was a O mint coin I would give it MS for sure...but an S.....

I dunno. For weak strikes, I'm also looking at the head/neck of the eagle and the edges of the wings just off the "shoulders," and the blossoms on the obverse. None of these areas on the auction coin are lacking in detail, yet they generally are on New Orleans mint strikes.

See alot of hairlines. San Fran is known for strong strikes as well as above average luster. I see wear on the hair above the ear, as well as wear on Eagles breast.
    I say AU50, perhaps AU53.
