The generous gift I received in last year's secret santa is very intriguing. After hours of comparing photos I think I have finally nailed it. This appears to match the VAM-35, but a later die state, as the cracks visible along the top edge of UNITED, and in the field north of the left olive branches extending through the wing to IGWT and including the small die chip in O of GOD, is not mentioned in the listing. I do not know if that new feature would qualify as a new VAM or an extension of the existing one, i.e. VAM-35a. The doubled eyelid appears to be there, as is the uniform doubling on the reverse. The reeding is not doubled. The mintmark is doubled... though I'd like confirmation that it is as described in the listing. I've included multiple shots of these areas with different lighting, and especially in the case of the shots of the eyelid I rotated the images around to align the view more closely with that of the picture provided on VamWorld. What do you all think?
I copied the date from vam world, and copied your date to, vam 35 doesn't match notice the denticle don't match, the image from vam world, the 1, and 4 of the date falls even in the denticle, and yours doesn't
Dang it.. How about the 48? http://www.vamworld.com/1884-O VAM-48 the pitting of the die in the field after TRUST appears to match. There is no mention of the cracks or the chip in O of GOD, or the doubling even though it is plainly visible in the photos in the link. Edit: Looks like the 48a. Almost positive now. http://www.vamworld.com/1884-O+VAM-48A
The obverse die break is there on mine in the field above the cap under US, traveling SE through the cap and extending S in the field under UNUM. though not pictured here, with my magnifier the crack going through the knot at the center of the wreath above the mint mark is faintly present. I think I got 'er now!
