I am newer to morgan collecting, have never seen this little "wave" before. It is raised enough to see with the naked eye and not mirrored like the rest of the field which u can in the pic. I have one other, different date and mm, with a very similar but not identical error. Or at least I hope it is an error.
That is one of the more common clashes you will see on Morgan dollars. It is from the cap "vee" where the cord draws it into Liberty's head. Other common ones to find are the diagonal line near the juncture of her neck and jaw. It is from the leading edge of the eagle's right wing (viewer's left), and if you look at that wing, you will probably see a vertical line extending from the wing toward the "n" of IGWT. That is Liberty's neckline. The clashes that are most sought after by the VAMpires are the letter transfers. Chris
Here is a link to the 1882 CC VAMS. Check yours against these and see what you may have. I also noticed the first C in the CC mint mark is "filled" with a die chip or something. That may be something else to go on as an attribute. Hope this helps. The coin looks beautiful by the way. http://www.vamworld.com/1882-CC+VAMs
Take a look at VAM-2B and check yours to see if there is a raised dot on the left side of the upper loop of the second "8". Chris
Glad you found it! I'm glad you found what you have. The only one I have is the 1887-P VAM 12-A. I am not hijacking you thread, just want to show you mine. The first pic is a similar clash to the first you posted.
Wow VAM's are a whole world I never knew about till now. I am guessing my coin is "proof like". How rare would u say having this type of VAM in a pl coin is? Is it worth getting slabbed?
I don't know if it would grade with that scratch across the cheek. It might get a Details grade. Chris
Funny you said that. When I first saw it I thought, dang that thing is mirror-like like a proof. I don't know much of anything about slabbing as I am pretty new to this great hobby and have yet to send a coin to a TPG. However, according to VAM world, there has only 1 been graded MS-64PL (PCGS), and according to "Coins" magazine, a MS-65PL lists for $1950! I am not good at grading either, but with those numbers, if I had the cash I would send it in.
Comparing to PCGS Photograde online, It looks very similar to the MS-64. If it graded MS-64PL it would be only the 2nd one graded. If it came back MS-65PL...$$$$$!!!
Here are some pics of my 1882-CC VAM-2C. This is what the "Cap Vee" looks like when it has clashed multiple times and has rotated about 7 degrees. A counterclash of the lips. This is the clashed "n". Note that it is doubled from more than one clash. More diagnostics....... Chris
Let's assume that it did grade (which would surprise me). At best it would probably get an MS62, but I don't think you would get the PL because it looks like there are some breaks in the fields. You can't have just part PL. It has to be the whole enchilada or nothing. Chris
Well I've got 7 beauties that my dealer is sending in for me tomorrow, mine as well throw one more on the pile and find out! I'll let ya know how it goes!
