bought this recently. my friends and I cant seem to agree if this is an actual jeton from the 1790's or just a modern piece. it is stamped " Argent " on one side. thanks
I couldn't find it in the Mitchiner reference, but there is another with the same reverse (Chambre des Notaires). How did you come up with the date, 1790? Chris
a friend thinks its that. I found one at ma-shops that says 1831-41. he thinks this is a modern piece. I cant find very much at all about this
Does it have a privy mark on the edge? I noted that yours does not have the name of the designer on it. In 1841, the Paris Mint started using a privy mark for each Director of the Mint because so many jetons and medals were being counterfeited. Often, silver was never used. Chris
Don't know anything about these jetons but this dealer for example lists a few of them: http://www.comptoir-des-monnaies.com/index.php/notaires-epernay-c-89509_96285_96294_96355 And the number (Lerouge 127a) apparently refers to this book: https://www.cgb.fr/jetons-et-docume...at-francais-m-e-et-j-lerouge,locc20214,a.html Christian
thank you for pointing this out. my jeton does have a privy mark next the word Argent on the rim. the mark is a bee. this dates it to Nov 1860 to Dec 1879. http://www.coinbooks.org/esylum_v17n38a12.html also from the dealer link above, the one they have matches mine exactly. thanks, this was fun.
If you find yourself becoming more and more interested in jetons, you might want to consider purchasing the book, "Jetons, Medalets & Tokens: The Low Countries and France, Volume Two" by Michael Mitchiner. The book isn't cheap, but it provides more than 800 pages (8-1/2" x 12") of information and pictures including an extensive index defining the legends and their meanings. Chris
