I came across this auction and figured it was one of two different kind of errors: 1) A die clash 2) An unknowledgeable buyer http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=524&item=8379340564#ebayphotohosting Intuitivly, I would think that a die clash would be lined up exactly front to back. This seems to have like a 10 degree rotation on only the obverse. I also would think that because the high and low spots on the die are a 'reverse' of the coin, a die clash would be visible in the field, not in the device. Is my thinking correct?
it looks ok....but I'm just starting to learn about such errors.....IMHO it seems to have gone alittle high. Speedy
Clash That was my understanding of a die clash also, that it showed mostly in the fields. I just read an article in a magazine about them, but I am by no means an expert. I went back and looked at the reverse of the cent, and it look tottaly wrong.
Hmm..That looks like a coin that has been smashed between two other lincoln cents. You are right about a clash showing up stronger if not only in the fields of the opposite side. I guess it could be a flip overstrike, but I would not touch that thing without authentication. Too easy to make at home. I see that the bidding is up above $11, gotta love Ebay.
True, but it looks incuse to me. Not really the best picture, another warning sign when bidding on ebay.
I think the image of Lincoln's bust on the Reverse is an optical illusion! It appears to be obtuse but I am pretty sure that it is incuse. If it were a result of Die Clashes, then Lincoln's upside down bust would be oriented (facing) left instead of to the right. The Lincoln Memorial showing on the Obverse is a no brainer as it is definitely incuse. Therefore, I would have to say that the errors were produced Post Mint! The errors were apparently produced by placing the 1962-D Cent between two other cents then hammering or applying pressure to the outside coins to press the image into the supposed error cent. Hopefully Mike Diamond will offer some insight into this and indicate as to whether I am right or wrong and whether it is a Mint error or Post Mint man made error. Frank
This is definitely a squeeze job. I was suckered into bidding on a couple of these when I started collecting errors. It doesn't take much to recognize them after you've been burnt once or twice.
The obverse shows the memorial building offset or tilted in conjunction with Lincolns bust. The reverse shows no such sign of a rotated die. My vote is for squeeze job. Pretty poor one at that! I like the "once in a lifetime" line. If you order now we'll throw in another error for free!!! Happy hunting, Michael
Simply repeat the process with two previously smashed coins....and whalah....a coin with flip strike-like properties.
Yeah....I know about the smashed coins and such but this didn't look indented...I guess it is though... Speedy
I looked at the feedback and the guy said he got a refund on this coin so you all must have been correct with a "squeeze job" and he must have known it when he saw it also. Here is the feedback: HONEST SELLER OFFERED NO PROBLEM " FULL REFUND " Buyer tradecoin ( 1734) Feb-16-06 16:03 8379340564
