Is this a proof Morgan?

    Hi guys,
I recently ran across a Morgan that was in a large group of others that stood out quite a bit to me. I don't think I have ever held a proof Morgan in my hands for more than 20 seconds but I think I may have found one in the wild. I took some photos of it compared to a business-strike Morgan and it appears much different, but isn't as worn. Anyways here are some photos, what does everyone think?
I must admit my photography skills are terrible and I am using a phone.

I just checked my Red Book on Morgan Dollars and no proofs were struck for that date/mm.

735 proofs were struck for 1898.

    It's an 1898-S!

I don't know. The rim and edge give it a possibility.

I think you're looking at the comparison coin. Look at the one on the left.

    Oops, you're right!

PS. I still don't think it is a proof.

I'm looking at the wrong one, too! I didn't even notice that "S," lol, I was so fixated on the rim and edge. Now I agree with Chris, the left one is no PR. The rim is too thin, for one.

Here is a photo of the rims side by side. The one I am thinking could possibly be proof is on the left, while the other (S) is on the right.

It looks distinctly thicker. Any chance it's a counterfeit, made thicker to bring its weight within spec?

I can check that out but it might be a few days. I can't say for certain but I didn't think of that possibility.

    I'm leaning towards yes...

I dunno; all I'm seeing is an AU Morgan (the "good" one is plainly circulated under additional magnification) compared to a barely-Fine Morgan, which makes rim comparisons kind of futile.
