I won an auction on Ebay on Thursday for a half dollar that cost around $10.00. I got busy with some family issues and never got back to the computer until today. I see that a case was openned for non payment and if I didn't pay by Wednesday night it would go on my record etc. As soon as I saw it I paid for the item and I received a message a few hours later from the seller saying he did not do this that Ebay does it automatically after 3 days without payment. Is this true???? This is the first time this has happened to me and I was a little offended by it.
Ebay has always recommend paying within 3 days of the sale to my knowledge. However it is not their policy to open a unpaid case unless the seller opens the case. What perhaps did happen in your case, the seller use "Unpaid Item Assistant" which automates the process of opening and closing unpaid item cases. It can set it up to automatically open a case after a specified time—4, 8, 16, 24, or 32 days after the listing ended. He forgot he set it up or did not know it was done.
Here is the email that I got from the seller after I paid for the coin today. Just got email from Ebay. Unpaid cases are opened automatically by Ebay now at 3 days. It was not me. Thank you for your purchase. Coin will ship Monday. Thanks much, Jim
Not true at all. I often wait more than three days to pay for an item, because I'm eyeing something else the seller is offering. Of course I always ask the seller if this is okay first.
The only time I can think of where this could be the case(I'm not familiar with the Ebay rules here) is for a buy it now where the seller stipulates immediate payment.
I don't think any cases are opened automatically by eBay at all. It has to be on a request. Man, I tell everyone I need to be paid within 3 days, but to contact me it that is a problem. Nobody wants to be tied up, but most understand if you need to wait till payday or something to make a payment. Gee.
As a seller, I have never opened a case against anyone. I understand that people may think they have a little extra money, but then the kid needs to go to the doc, or they were drunk and their wife is going to kill them for bidding that much...whatever it is, I always give them the time they need to pay...and also the benefit of the doubt that maybe they are just out of town or something and will pay as soon as they can.
