My girlfiend found this coin awhile back and I really have no idea on what to make of it. The metal around what looks like a german eagle with the three stars doesn't appear to be raised or moved from a restrike. I would figure that ths has to be a after mint strike. Has anyone any idea what this is or how it could ge on a 1952 s Franklin US half dollar??
I laughed so hard when I read the title of this thread, but back on topic. I have no idea. Its pretty neat though
Awww, such a pessimistic way to attribute a counter-mark, wouldn't you say? I collect these sorts of anomalies
I don't have any problem with it...and i have several counter stamped coins in my collection. I just can't make out this stamp in the photo. Plus, as cool as many of them are...they are still PMD.
I appreciate all the comments. O also figured it was PMD. I have absolutely no problems with this coin. I find it interesting and intriguing. Also seeing that it is the German eagle and my GF who found it in my coll. was born on no one elses Bday but Hitler. April 20th. Ill try to ge better photo of the eagle and stars.
cant tell exactly what that eagle is but it looks to be holding arrows or branches - doesnt look like a nazi eagle to me, besides that coin is dated 7 years after the end of WWII - not that some nut job couldnt put a nazi symbol on a newer coin - just doesnt look like one to me
A family member mentioned that the eagle and three stars reminded him of he german eagle. I honestly am not sure. I figured that being close to the time of the war however it would b more likely to be possible.
Looking at the photos...the eagle symbol does not look like a Nazi symbol. Nazi eagles normally don't have stars included in the design...but they never have a shield or arrows in the talons. This looks much more like a stamp designed to illustrate an eagle with US symbolism.
it's a rifle stamp http://www.trfindley.com/pgsnstmpsm1.html look half way down the page. S/N 4,320,000-6,099,905 June 1953-June 1957 Department of Defense Acceptance Stamp (Eagle with 3 stars) .50" by .50". Other stamp used on the stocks was the circled 'P' proof mark (with serifs) on the pistol grip.
Wow.. thank u very much. That was exactly what I was looking for. Still pretty new at most of this stuff. I kind of got a nice little shove recently lol. I have never seen anything like this. Is it possible that this is rare or contains some added or decreased value??
I don't think there is any extra value I have seen other gun stamps on coins. maybe if someone really wanted to mount the coin in the stock of there M1 Grande they might buy it.
I hope nobody would do that...I think the M1 is one of the most beautiful rifles just as it is. I love mine.
Also i was curious on how someone made this tiny little version of the rifle stamp. All the ones on the list are many timea larger than the one on the '52 Franklin.
