is this a mint error or something done after the fact ?

I found this in my change today. I thought it was a penny made into jewelry then taken out but a close look at the side profile shows copper. Is this a die issue ? Any ideas ? 1odd-back 1.jpg

Welcome to CoinTalk Bill! I think it might have been mounted to a piece of jewelry and removed... not sure though...

Hmm..I guess it could have been jewelry..But its a 1991 penny so I dont know why it would be used for jewelry. Im sure someone else will have an answer soon.

It took a ride in a commercial clothes dryer. the edge has started to roll over onto the reverse. Post mint damage.
