These old Cobs are magical pieces. They hold the aura of life at sea, pirates and the like.... It is easy to be drawn into buying one.... Now I am far from your early Spanish coin expert but I'll offer up what my senses tell me. Years ago after hurricane Hugo battered my state I was fortunate to happen upon the old Cob below and did a little research on them. This is what my eyes see... I do not see a casting seam or any evidence of casting in your photos. That is a good thing. I also do not see any devices on the reverse and that gives me mild pause, but not too much. As you can see from my example, life on the bottom of the sea can certainly erase much of the old Cobs detail. Shooting from my hip, I think your piece is authentic. I do believe it was deeply cleaned and probably endured the removal of some encrustation that further eliminated much of the coins details. I believe your piece is the real deal.
