I was going through a roll of 1955-s lincolns and found several of these. The 9, 5 and s are all filled. Looking online, I can find references to "filled s", "filled 9" and 'filled 5", but not all three. Surely this is a known type? Am I missing something?
The 9 looks like it took a hit and was flattened but the other two look like die chips. Very minor and a keeper.
All 3 are Die Chips. I've seen an example of it. You also gave a Poor Man's Doubled Die. Not an actual Doubled Die. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/FAQ/Poormansdoubleddie.html That's all caused by a worn die. Die Deterioration is the culprit.
It's definitely interesting to have all the die chips, A poormans doubled die is not technically a DDO. It is a die deterioration issue, so it could happen to any of the 55S dies used.
Thanks to everyone for the die deterioration information! I'd seen that on other coins and was wondering what it was - I knew it wasn't true doubling, but in some cases its impressive anyway.
