I'm not too familiar with Mercury varieties, and seem to have misplaced my copy of the cherrypicker's guide. But this die crack through Liberty's hairline really stood out to me - is the position of the crack a known variety for the 1940-S? Taking a closer look at the pic now, I actually see up to three smaller cracks on the obverse as well.
The only place I have seen die cracks used to identify a variety is when used in conjunction with VAM.
That Merc has a very cool appearance. I don't consider die cracks to be varieties, but they do enhance the originality on blast white coins.
Ah got it, thanks for the clarification all. My only other familiarity with varieties was with Morgan/Peace VAMs, so just assumed the same logic (die crack = variety) applied to all other coin series.
