When the SBA's first came out, I went to the bank and got a roll of the new dollars. This coin was in the roll. What are your opinions of it ?
It's pretty hard to tell with these. The quality was all over the place. I might have to say that this is a weak strike, just going off of the weak rims. I will let folks answer besides entering a different coin into the conversation. I just went thru 185 of these from souvenir sets. Have you weighed the coin to see if it may be a rolled thin planchet?
I believe it to be a severely debris-filled die (greaser). I've never seen an SBA that bad before. What say you @Fred Weinberg ?
@Hambone1946 - I agree with FF! If it wasn't the result of a grease-filled die, wouldn't you expect to see some (or all) of the rim missing, too?
That SBA has seen better days. It does appear the mint mark is filled. A lot of PMD, in my opinion. Good luck.
But it’s a D not a P so it is exactly what it should be. Only “wide rim” P’s are what to look for. Only 1 win for OP.
This one has me puzzled! Mint mark does look like a D yet the date appears to be close enough to the rim to be a wide rim. Also there a lot of what appears to be scratches on both sides, which indicates circulation! However, the weakness around the rim and other areas indicates it could be a serious greaser! Will be interested to find out the final verdict!!! I'm
This coin came from an original bank roll when they came out. All the others in the roll were BU as issued. This coin came from the mint this way. I've had it since 1979 when I got it at the bank.
It could be struck with a tilted die. I see what looks to be finning on the left of both sides. Which is my reason for ruling out a weak strike. JMO of photos provided.
