Someone is offering to sell me a 1oz Gold American Eagle coin for $1500. Is that a good deal? Also, what ways do you guys have of verifying if something is authentic?

    Thanks

it's a touch under melt ... so its a fair price ... buying US gold coins with no premium is always nice

How well do you know this dealer person? If it turns out to be a fake or a Chinese copy are you going to be able to get your money back? The price is below spot but if it's not from a reputable dealer you might be throwing away your money. Apmex is selling 2011 AGE's for almost $1600. Why is this person willing to take $100 less? If you're buying from an Ebay account, then pay with a credit card through Paypal, for the return guaranty.

This is a craigslist deal. I have never met this person.

I'd pass since there are no seller protections through Craigslist. For all you know, it may be stolen. As a rule, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

The price of the 1-oz Gold Eagle is a very good deal because Gold American Eagles usually have a high premium on them based prices that I have seen in the past. Normally I would say to go for it but since it is on Craigslist and you do not know the person, then I would pass.

The reason that I say to pass on this deal because there is too much that can go wrong with Craigslist when meeting a complete stranger to do a $1500 transaction and the a gold coin priced slightly under spot gold price just seems suspect to me. Then there is also that possibility that this person may not have the gold coin at all and might try to rob you of your cash.

As 2 others have said, stay away from this deal.

Never buy gold coins off craigslist.com. You will have no recourse if it turns out to be fake.

I don't buy gold period, but if I did, I wouldn't buy it from a reputable dealer, not craigslist.

I have bought non-numismatic items from craigslist all with 100% satisfaction and no problems.

I buy coins off CL all the time, good deals to be had if you keep your eyes open. Got a few morgans for $20 each last week, for example.

If you are set on buying it, I would see if a reputable dealer would be willing to be present for the exchange and inspect it (for a small fee), this would most likely scare off a seller with bad intent.
