I was looking at the back of a 1983 penny for some doubling when I noticed what I think might be a die crack. These are the best photos I can provide. What do you think? Thanks.
Cool. So I guess I shouldn't throw it back in the pile? I've a lot to learn about these kinds of things. What should I do with it? Does it have value? Thanks
Value ? Not really, but it is a neat collectible. Many collectors form entire sets of coins with die cracks. It just depends on what appeals to you.
I'm not surprised at the lack of value but it was fun to find. I guess I won't throw it back in the pile, after all, it is my first find of any kind of "error". Thanks all.
Terribly Common??? I have a huge collection of these die breaks, and was wondering how common and why it happens to particular years. Most of mine are 1983, 1984s and also include all 4 corners of the memorial. Any comments or input are welcome....
If the value reflects the rarity, then die cracks pretty much fall to the bottom of the list. As stated above, they are just too common. Most dealers won't even bring them to your attention when showing you the coin and often times I have been told, "oh that's just a die crack". I have one dealer that will knock more off the price if they are there. He considers them blemishes that distract from the beauty of a coin.
