?

Is this a coin that should number grade only or be given a details grade?

If I was to send this one to a better grading service (PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG, SEGS, NTC) would it come back detail graded or with a regular grade?

If you believe the coin will "details" grade then what are the issues with it?

Looks to have a greenish patina, also it looks to me like there are some large rim nicks, there for you would most likely get VF Details. Most likely details would be from environmental damage or i believe the rim damage would come under scratches category !!!

Your list of "better" grading services is 3 names too long.

Before judging the other three, be open-minded and try them out (at least once to be fair). If you see their grading is honest and reasonably accurate then why knock them? All six of these graders seem reasonably good however none are perfect as is well established.

    It's covered in PVC.

I suspected that was the case. I'm glad you noted this as well.

Give it an acetone soak and post it again.

Okay, let's say I do that and the PVC is off. Would the rim damage alone details grade the coin?

Are you trying to put together a low ball set?

given that it is a circulated coin, unless the rim hits appear deliberate (like knife cuts) I think it would probably receive a grade.

I would think so... But the removal of the PVC should improve the eye appeal.

Soak it on acetone. Get rid of the PVC and I think at a quality NGC pcgs or decent anacs grading company you got a 50/50 chance of it either grading clean or coming back rim damage

Yeah, I think the rev. rim dings get into the realm of
"damage" vs. circulation wear and that gets into the subjectivity of the grader, whether they got stuck in traffic that AM, had their coffee, slept well, etc etc

Which side do you consider the reverse? For this piece it is subjective.

So tell me what acetone product works best? I worry about treating it as I never tried before. I don't want to handle it wrongly in this process either then it will be making a bad problem no better, likely worse.

Real easy go to the hardware store and get a pint or so can of acetone Get a glass jar plastic will likely dissolve why acetone is good on PVC residue. Pour acetone in jar drop coin in or vice versa allow to soak for a day or two remove coin. Rinse thouroughly with water. Let dry on towel or paper towel. Avoid rubbing coin just soak and rinse is real easy it'll remove PVC and just plain grime. I often get circulated coins that are kinda greasy or have crud from handling it often gets rid of that too

It almost looks like it was ex-jewelry to me. The rim marks seem like 3 or 4 prongs where holding the coin at one point. Or maybe I just connecting dots that are random hits.

It does have that look and almost like there's solder and a spot where it was removed
