Ice, does the doubling show up anywhere else on the coin? I agree that it's probably machine doubling. It would be easier to find out with more information, like the year/mintmark mentioned above.
Ice, with this photo it is impossible to tell. You will need to get a much clearer and closer image of the area you think is doubled. Machine Double Strikes are much more common. Most DDO would be known for this date if there were any and if they were know to exist you would have to get a better photo to tell. Or you could read up on DDO types and how to disguise them from machine strike doubles. There is alot of information discussing Indian Head pennies that will cover DDO and strike doubles. There may be something on Kennedy Halfs but I would know for sure.
Now those are nice photos. This is an mint error coin. Not familiar enough with Kennedy Halfs but this coin is worthy of getting more information.
Definitely a DDO and a nice one at that! I am not sure if it has a designation or not as I am at work and don't have my books. It is not listed with Coneca! Edited: Oops! I saw the 1966 SMS DDO and thought that it was a new picture of the OP's coin! There I retract my earlier statement until better close-up pictures are posted! Frank
I would say it's Machie doubling i have found many kennedy halves with machine doubling on the profile as well as the reverse of the coin on the letting with extreme MD The differance between the 66 doubled die and the op's the images are raised and rounded on the 66 and the ops coin looks more like machine doubling shelf like images by those pics. The odds are more in favor of it being MD then a DD for that year but we could come up with a conclusion by giving us better pics for sure Jazzcoins joe alien hybrid ZEC
Ice…your half dollar is MDD (Machine Damaged Doubling)…you can see, besides the die bounce on the profile, it is also on the cheek and ear. Sumorada…that is a nice 66 SMS DDO you have posted. Have you tried to attribute it using the CONECA listings…what die is it? It looks like, from your photo, there is a CW spread on the I in LIBERTY. There are about five DDO’s in the listings with that PUP. You should be able to figure out which die you have using the descriptions and markers. If it turns out to be a DDO-007…we need to talk, I have been looking for the 007 for years…the only one I need to find to complete the 66 SMS series. http://www.conecaonline.org/content/kennedydoubleddies19651970.html#_1966_5 Larry Nienaber
I'm not sure which one it was, I had 3-4 different that I had graded at NGC, If I remember right there reference for this one was VP-002..? I'm pretty sure I sold it on ebay last year.......here are the rest of the pics I took.
That's the '66 SMS coin. It is excellent! For others out there, there is one almost identical on business strike 1966 Kennedys. There are actually several different 1966 DDOs in the series. This SMS piece is, in my opinion, one of the nicest! Have Fun, Bill
Actually Bill...there are 36 DDO's listed from CONECA in the 1966 series, 18 SMS's and 18 BS's. All but 6 have some profile doubling. http://www.conecaonline.org/content/kennedydoubleddies19651970.html#_1966_5 Larry Nienaber
Hi Larry, Absolutely, there are some with only the smallest doubling on the serifs of the W on WE, some that don't have doubling on the profile, and many that do. There are also some that CONECA doesn't have listed ;-) The DDOs shown above are some of the strongest and easiest to spot For others, as Larry said the possibilities are numerous. Check everything Use the above pictures to study what a doubled die looks like versus machine doubling which is very common on Kennedys. Thanks, Larry!! Have Fun, Bill
