I've never had a coin like this. On the obverse side of the rim there is finning, and on the reverse is this cut. Are they related and what kind of error/damage do you experts think this is?

Finning, no. A bit of MAD (Misaligned Die) on the Obverse. PMD - Post Mint Damage on the Reverse.

Hey tomfiggy, don't feel like that. It was a good question and a interesting cent! It sure does have a minor error with the double rim to the left of LIBERTY. That's why I said it's like a misaligned die. At least you didn't post this coin, ask the questions and then start going against all the answers given to you as if you were completely right and no one else was. There was a post one time where the person told Mike Diamond that he was wrong  That was a shocker!
