It isn't just you. This one spent some time in the ground I would think but it can really highlight detail. There is nothing you can do to change that as far as I know (just responded to your other thread). Cool coin and the way it's intended to be.
That looks to me like a corroded buffalo. Unfortunately, most collectors will not value it as much as a non-corroded coin. Doesn't make it any less neat or any less a part of history or any less yours though! Respectfully...Mike
It looks like it is high relief! The darkness highlights the spectacular design on both sides of the coin. Yes indeed, very pleasant to look at, and although it goes against common wisdom, I would pay a premium for this coin. Mike
They make for a nice cameo proof also Too bad there are only 16......Im happy to have one! PCGS PR66CAM
One of the unique american coins and what a great example, shows the real artistry and detail put into the design. Thanks for showing that.
The sculpture really shows on this one Heres my 1913 p T1 in MS67. The sculpture effect on the fields is much more evident than on the proof, which is polished out. Also, you see how the effect of the design is much better with the raised ground. This is one coin they should certainly reinstate. We've seen far too much of Jefferson, in my opinion!
Great looking buffalos - all. One of my favorite coins for many years. Used to get them in change and spend them regularly when I was a young kid. Wish I'd saved a bunch of them.
Funny though they are "not the same" after all those years of circulation and wear. To really get the full impact on these, and appreciate the art of the design....MS65 and above!
My only gripe is the date wears off them much too quickly. I have a handful of dateless buffs, some with D and S mints. Tempted to nik-a-date them just to see if they are from the teens.
They are very nice with a little wear but I agree that getting the full depth of detail, and they ARE pretty high relief, it does make a difference. I am not a huge fan of American coins in general but this type I have always loved. I just feel its a coin that is very uniquely American. Again that is a lovely example.
I know when I heard in 2004 they were doing the Buffalo again, I was very excited. Then, they came out with that flat, silly little excuse for a buffalo, and I was very dissapointed. If they are going to go retro, for goodness sake, dont try to improve on perfection! BTW, take a good look at the face on an original St. Gaudens 20 and then take a look at the face on the bullion 50 version. She looks like a ZOMBIE!!
I'd never call them perfect Ambro. Yes, one of my favorite designs if you get down to it and I like the older stuff. Cool but HORRIBLY designed. Good for the people at Nic a Date though.
