is this a coin error?

    First, welcome to the neighborhood @AlexM !

    Is it raised above the surface? Can you post a photo of the same general area on the reverse? I'd like to see if there is any deformation.

    Chris, thanks! It is raised above the surface. Here's a picture of the reverse. The projection is approximately where the word "United" is located.

    Looks like all but the L in "LIBERTY" is covered with something (glue?) attaching that 'projection'. It certainly didn't come from the mint like that.
