Hello all, I received this 1878-CC Morgan in the mail today which is very nice, but it has this line that runs along Morgan’s face from her chin all the way to liberty. You can see it best on the 2nd obverse picture with the lights reflection. The coin doesn’t look like it’s cleaned it does look like it has bag marks and the coin still has nice luster and cartwheel effect on both sides, and the coin doesn’t show any signs of being previously dipped, any ideas what could cause this or is this an error type? Thanks again!
When you have time, check your coin against the VAM listings for this date and MM. WARNING this can be addictive but a lot of fun. First thing to do is identify the reverse, long nock or short, then go through them one by one if you have to, to identify the PUP's (pick up points), similar to looking for die markers. http://vamworld.com/wiki/1878-CC_VAMs
The coin is unquestionably cleaned. There are abrasive marks all over the devices and fields. It is clearly a MS details coin. The VAM you think you see is a set of cleaning marks. Hope you did not pay much for the coin. Luster? I see little to no natural luster. Once again, the pitfalls of buying uncertified Morgans shows its head again.
Thanks for the link just got done skimming through some, nothing caught my eye but I will take a better look here after dinner!
I got it for around 280$ I did t know cleaned coins could still have the cartwheel affect that nice. I also checked the reflection of the fields and devices and there was a light reflection just how none cleaned Morgan’s have that I’ve dealt with. I feel like it’s very obvious the reflection with light and other things such as my finger.
It has no original luster. If you want to convince yourself that the coin is not cleaned, go right ahead. It does not impact me on way or another. However $280 for a cleaned, uncertified coin should raise red flags. Certified 1878 cc coins can be had for $330-350.
It was cleaned as posted above (by someone much smarter than me on the topic) not terribly done, though. Still cleaned
Not trying to convince myself but with my knowledge level of “cleaned” coins state them to see if they are correct or not, that is all. Thank you for your advice.
Yes sadly that’s what it sounds like, I have started the return process as it was my goal to list the coin on eBay. The sellers pictures showed 0 scratches, was pretty excited for this one to arrive.
Hopefully Air but I was also stung buying a raw 1915 s 2 1/2 Pan Pac gold coin I think about $750 sent out for grading (ex Jewelry) but best I could do? Learning is earning? Best to you Graded is where it's at?
Yes it’s eBay and they accept returns but even if they didn’t I’m sure eBay would side with me because the fields looks almost perfect in their pictures. Big bummer seeing it in hand honestly
