I was wondering if this appears to be a "carbon spot". I'm doing an experiment in the lab tonight, or tommorrow, most likely tommorrow to see about removing these spots without damaging the coin. Just for fun, the coin in the picture is relatively worthless.

Excellent, I will track down a penny with some carbon spots, and post the results of my experiment, assuming I get anything interesting.
Because it was the only one ever graded that high. Of course it didn't stay "graded that high". That coin is a story all unto itself - one that caused a great deal of controversey in the numismatic world.
