I picked this up a little while ago, and since, I've been comparing it to like coins with similar and lower grades. And I can't seem to bring myself to give it the grade it has, in fact, I'd say it's at least (3) points lower. What grade would you give it? Have you ever seen a "mark" like the one noted as 3 on the reverse of an Indian Head Quarter gold piece? I thought I had, but I can't find one now. Marks 1 and 2 are very obvious in hand. I was thinking I may resubmit it to ANACS under there guarantee program. Do you think it might pay off?
This coin looks very familiar. Did you post it in a different thread? I remember an indian like this with marks in similar position ending up in an MS-63 slab.
What grade did ANACS give it originally? Also, what is going on to the left of IN GOD WE TRUST and along the top of the Eagle? :kewl: Looks like chisel marks? Ribbit
We don't know what grade was assigned, so can't agree or disagree that the coin is over-graded. Also, unless the coin was graded January 1, 2008 or later, as best I can tell, their guarantee doesn't apply anyway. As per their website: "ANACS guarantees the grade and authenticity of coins it has certified and encapsulated in an ANACS holder since being purchased by new ownership on January 1, 2008."
Good memory, I did post the seller pics right after I bought it! And it is a MS-63. I'm actually looking for an honest grade. The #3 mark almost makes me think this coin is damaged. But let's say it's not damaged, I don't really see any wear, so I could see it as an MS-60 or MS-61. It came in an MS-63 slab. I don't know what that is, I went and looked at some coins from Heritage and don't see those marks on any other Quarter Eagles.
From what I see, your mark #3 is not coin damage. It does not go through the high points and they would be the first to be damaged when something hits the coin. To me that indicates something hit the die and not the coin. Therefore, it would not be a strike against the coin. Assuming that I am correct (and I am pretty sure that I am), that coin would be properly graded.
Thanks for all the replys everyone. Most of what you see in pics will never be seen in hand, or even with 5x magnification, and it has fantastic luster in hand. It just seems to have more contact marks than most 63's I've compared it to. The fact that it may have a die clash and something that contacted the die makes me like it more now. I think I was getting paranoid about all the contacts marks and the fact that other coins I've been looking at didn't seem to have them, but maybe they don't have a 70mm macro len :hammer: I looked at the "die clash" with a 10x loupe and can't see it.
