is this a blank planchet?

i found this in a bag of pennies while wrapping them at the bank this morning. the size is approximately the same as a regular cent, or perhaps ever-so-slightly smaller in diameter (<1mm). it feels the same weight as a regular cent, but i can't check for sure until i get home this afternoon. it's the same color as a cent, it's not magnetic, and makes the same sound when dropped onto a surface.

i was wondering if the size difference would be common with a blank planchet, since the cent will be flattened a bit inside the die, and would essentially "fill out" into the collar. both sides are completely free of any impressions, and both sides have the same slightly raised edge around the rim.

    thoughts? thanks!

i've been looking at blanks on ebay and google img search, and they all look pretty much the same as this one. mine has seen better days, what with the discolorations on each side, but it's still a fun find nonetheless.

    thanks for the input non_cents!

jello- i am the bank roll wrapper ;-)

i haven't been able to do much of the coin wrapping for the last month or so (summer help has to do the grunt work while i cover for vacationers) but i managed to get a look at one of the pennies bags coming off the coin counter this morning. i lucked out with finding this one sitting right on the top of the pile.

last week i recovered a decent '63 franklin from a bag of halves. i haven't seen one of those come through in over a year. the cent from today is my first blank. things tend to happen in threes, so hopefully the next find will be something really interesting...

Yes it is a planchet, and yes a planchet is slightly smaller than the finished coin. (If it was the same size it would tend to jam when you tried to put the planchet into the collar for striking. The finished coin is actually wedged against the inside of the collar and has to be PUSHED out. A planchet that same size would NOT just drop into the collar)
