Recently picked up the cherry pickers guide volume 1 and 2, and have been having fun going through listings on eBay trying to find some varieties :). Bought this recently, and it appears to match the picture of the 1917 D 3 1/2 legs buffalo nickel in the book.

If the pictures are too blurry I can try my USB microscope. Thanks for the help guys ;).

1 3 one half buffalo.jpg Small image but most of the leg must be missing except for the very top and hoof.

    The 3 legged is a 1937 D, not a 1917 D

The 1917 D 3 1/2 variety was first discovered in 1999. It is also believed to be a ddo. From the images posted I couldn't confirm or reject this specimen to be the variety .
The ddo there should be doubling on the 1 and 7 in the date. One would also believe that this variety would hold a strong premium , maybe in xf,Au and ms coins lower grades it seems it Doesn't .

Tommy your image seems to be a 37 D not a 17. As the image posted has the pups of a 37.

I have been on the computer waaay too long today and I missed the 1. You are correct, my goof. I can't wait for this snow to be gone and I'm back in my gardens.

Sorry, I was referring to the post from tommy, not the 17D originally posted. I see I was very vague.

Are you sure that is a 7 and not the top part of a 3?
    1913-D type 2 is a key date.

I'm in bed now, tomorrow morning I'll plug in my microscope and get some better pictures.

Ok, so this isn't the best microscope heh...but only paid 60 bucks. Someday I'll pick up a nice one. So I got a couple shots of the date, and a couple of the front legs on the reverse.
