Recently picked up the cherry pickers guide volume 1 and 2, and have been having fun going through listings on eBay trying to find some varieties . Bought this recently, and it appears to match the picture of the 1917 D 3 1/2 legs buffalo nickel in the book. If the pictures are too blurry I can try my USB microscope. Thanks for the help guys .
There is also a listed 1917-D similar http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/38441 When you put your pointer over the area. it is magnified, and you can see the outline almost 100%, so it is not the same as the 1937-D ( see) https://www.cointalk.com/threads/coin-buying-education-101-3-new-7-31.63603/page-2#post-654521 post #23. I can see enough in your photo myself. Jim
The 1917 D 3 1/2 variety was first discovered in 1999. It is also believed to be a ddo. From the images posted I couldn't confirm or reject this specimen to be the variety . The ddo there should be doubling on the 1 and 7 in the date. One would also believe that this variety would hold a strong premium , maybe in xf,Au and ms coins lower grades it seems it Doesn't .
I have been on the computer waaay too long today and I missed the 1. You are correct, my goof. I can't wait for this snow to be gone and I'm back in my gardens.
Sorry, I was referring to the post from tommy, not the 17D originally posted. I see I was very vague.
Ok, so this isn't the best microscope heh...but only paid 60 bucks. Someday I'll pick up a nice one. So I got a couple shots of the date, and a couple of the front legs on the reverse.
Yes, your coin is an authentic 1917-D, 3 1/2 leg Buffalo Nickel. This is Bob White and I discovered the variety. Nice find!
