Is this 1994 D a double die?

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Victoria Littlefield, Aug 5, 2019.

  1. I noticed doubling on the words and date on both sided of my 1994 d penny. Couldnt get a good picture of the words on the back but you can definitely see it in the 1994, liberty, IN GOD and in ONE. Thoughts??

No.. Not a Doubled Die Variety.
What you are seeing is DDD - Die Deterioration Doubling. Worn die strike.

  4. Thank you. I'm new to collecting. Can you tell me how to tell the difference?

    Welcome to the neighborhood, Victoria!

The Mint changed from 95% copper to 95% zinc midway through 1982. Crappy Zincolns have a very, very thin layer of copper on the outside, and so, have a tendency to deteriorate in a variety of ways once they begin circulating. That is why I call them Crappy Zincolns!

Minted from a well worn die that should have been retired a long time ago. It's also a zinc Cent and that makes it worse.
