My wife and I found this beat up nickel in a toll booth change return. It weighs in at 4.69g Which I understand to be the copper content of a nickel. However, I don't know how to strip nickel from a coin or how damaging it would be to the copper core. Also, I am not sure how well the stamp would seat into the underlying copper layer either. The scenario I envision is, someone stripped this coin of nickel at some point and it's seen a lot of wear since. I'm hoping a possible copper planchet snuck into the mix without nickel plating? wishful thinking at best, I know. So here it is!
Thats pure Environmental Damage Here are examples from my metal detected finds Nickels contain copper. It's a mixture called Cupro-Nickel. The Copper darkens when exposed to the elements.
Alloys are mixed together not coated on the surface, so a nickel isn't nickel coated over copper. Your 66 year old coin has been thruogh hell and back the reason you found it in the reject bin. Value 5 cents unless you put it in a machine in that case look in the reject bin.
If that were to be the case it would be the same size, width and weight of a Copper Cent Planchet. Here also is an example from my collection -
Excellent. Thank you all for the info! I reckon I need to do some more reading as was mentioned to me earlier when joining the site! Oops! Have a great day and thanks for your time all!
