I have a very hard time grading Peace Dollars. I tend to be biased with coins I own and over grade as well. I bought this as Uncirculated for $55. What do you think?
I would say it is AU due to the color of the coin and the dent. And to be accurate please attach a reverse picture. Dan
The lighting is bad today (heavy overcast) and flash relects off the coin. I cannot do an obverse picture today. If the coin is AU then it's not worth $55. What is it worth?
I don't think that the lighting is affecting Doug's statement and unfortunately, I think he's right. What it's worth is a tricky question. The current demand for Peace Dollars is not as strong as other series and were you trying to sell this coin many dealers would offer you nothing more than silver melt value. OTOH a coin is worth what someone will pay for it and I believe that you may have paid $55 for this coin and that is unfortunate but not an unforgivable mistake. A cheap tuition for the lesson learned if you ask me. That said, look at eBay completed auctions for AU 1935 Peace Dollars and you will get a better picture of what the eBay market feels it's worth.
Strong strike, but shows minimal wear and some decent hits in the fields. The luster also doesn't support that of an "Unc" coin. Infact, I'd like to say this coin has, at one point, been cleaned (or improperly dipped), but it's a tough call... The glare from your lighting source with the coin's surface may just mimic the typical color and "luster" seen on a cleaned example. -Brian
Does the coin actually look liike your pic? If so, the coin has no luster and was probably dipped too long or too many times. If the coin doesn't look like the pic, post better pics of the obverse & reverse
I attached one more pic. I accept the fact I got screwed. If the coin is worth $35 - $40 (ebay average for AU) then I lost $15-$20. That won't kill me nor discourage me. As someone said, that's cheap tuition to pay for a learning lesson. I bought the coin on eBay and took the sellers word that it was BU. The seller had an excellent rating too.
>>gEF << I think it's AU. The reverse image is flat due to the lighting. It has way more detail than what shows in that pic.
It depends how far you want to take it, but I would at least contact the seller and ask for a return. The item is nowhere close to "as described" The seller might be willing to take it back to avoid any hassle, especially if you have not given your feed back yet. If the seller refuses, you can open a case with EBAY. It is up to you, it's a cheap lesson, but the item is only worth melt and if it is worth the time and effort, I think there is a good chance to get you money back. Mike
The seller refuses to refund. FWIW: I opened a case with PayPal. I won't post the sellers name. He has excellent feedback with about 1269 feedbacks at 99.9%. The few negative feedbacks all have to do with grading. Going forward I will only buy professionally graded and slabbed coins. It's worth the extra money.
Yeah, that obverse has been scrubbed (see the vertical lines all over, running in the same direction) - hard to tell on the reverse through the toning.
Just for grins, compare the seller's photos with my photos. Do you think they were touched up? I filed a claim with PayPal.
I don't think they were touched up, but it looks like he angled the coin/camera to try and hide as much of the wear and marks as he could to make it look better than it actually is. Deceptive all the same. Lesson learned?
