I started my numismatic life 45 years ago with roman, would not receive a modern proof as a gift.times pass and I am starting to see artistic merit and interest in silver proofs.showing Australia $5 reverse captain james cook, comes with information certificate---is this a sign of old age in me and nothing more
no. a lot of people love proof coins. there is nothing wrong with liking them. best thing about coin collecting is collecting what you love. you will get more enjoyment out of them.
some deep cameo Franklin halves have gone crazy in prices. there is huge market for deep cameo coins. all depends on scarcity and availability.
Yes, they are typically worth more than face value. . . LOL . . . I'd like to slap the mints around a bit for consuming everyone's time and money with these issues.
Hmmm - whenever I see this question about moderns the same thought always pops into my mind. Every coin ever made, clear back to the very first one, was "modern" when it was made. And where would we be, today, if somebody hadn't decided to keep them ?
Hello wyvern, It is cool to like all coins & I personally buy something modern & proof from time to time. FYI only- There is a batch of modern US proof quarters (wide variety of designs) available in the for sale section that are being sold at something like $13.50 x face value. Check it out. I got this piece at a recent coin show. It came with a cute wooden box and is supposedly a PF70:
The mint has gotten outta hand with all the diff modern coins their making. I've collected coins since I was 6 or 7 years old. way before there was a pcgs or ngc there was the ANA. All the labels and the large dealers make it hard to root through the junk and find right coin to buy. But that's why I'm here...
Tricky question ... I like 'em all, but I don't buy any of 'em as retirement investments ... => oh, but I totally agree with GDJMSP => it's a random crap-shoot which of them will become worth more than a sweet ol' pond-skipping-stone!!?
