If that's the kind of information you're looking for, then: The ultimate book in this direction is Chuck O'Donnell's Standard Handbook of Modern United States Paper Money. Unfortunately there hasn't been an edition published since 1982, but it might be worth tracking down an old copy just to have the data on the older series. Somebody *really* needs to convince Krause Publications to update this book! The best modern equivalent is probably Schwartz and Lindquist's Standard Guide to Small-Size U.S. Paper Money. It's basically O'Donnell with a lot of the fiddly details left out to make the size of the book manageable. And it's still updated every couple of years or so. If you care mostly about $1's, then you might try Azpiazu's Collector's Guide to $1 FRNs. It's got about the same level of detail as O'Donnell, but it doesn't include the other denominations. Unfortunately, it's also new, and like most first-edition reference books, it's got a nontrivial number of typos.
