It would take a while to dig up the documentation, and I'm not positive it was about dimes but it may well have been. But I am reasonably certain that yes some US coins were mistakenly struck in silver in 1965. Something like this happens as an accident really. A planchet or two from 1964 gets stuck in the hopper. Then in 1965 it comes loose and is struck along with the clad planchets and is released into circulation. Eventually - somebody finds it.
Wish I could get lucky and find such things. Though I did find 2 pre 1965 coins in a coinstar machine (same machine but found them at different times)
This one is pretty common with ten or twelve known. There are also a few 1965 silver quarters and persistent rumors of a '65 90% silver half though there is much doubt about this last one. There are a few 1964 clad dimes and a unique 1964 clad quarter. Lest this seem too simple there are also 1964 silver quarters with a reverse intended for clad coins (~.1% of mintage) and a few 1965 clad quarters with the reverse intended for silver quarters. This is not very unusual when there are so many changes going on at the mint but it was far worse in 1965 because the mint was striking 1964 and 1965 coinage simultaneously.
The 1965 clad quarter with the reverse intended for silver quarters is available in circulation. There were probably several thousand made but most have been lost and most of the rest are now quite worn. There aren't many accounted for.
There are several other rare '64 and '65 issues but just a very high grade '65 SMS dime in DCam might bring this kind of money. This is a tough date in DCam. By the same token the business strike of this coin is tough in high grade and could bring amounts approaching this level. There are a few SMS which may be technically proofs. While I've never seen a proof '65 dime, it shouldn't be ruled out.
1943 Bronze 1c. GDJMSP,the same thing happened in 1943 with the 1c. coin.The end result - the 1943 bronze 1c. coins,which are very rare,& technically,they are an off-metal coin,as would any 1965 coins struck in silver would be. Aidan.
1964 coins were struck into March 1966. Are there any silver 1966 coins? Also are there any clad 65 quarters with a D mintmark? With so many changes going on at the mint I would think that all combinations are possible.
I've never heard of any mintmarked coins from '65 to '67 though there are some which can be shown to have been struck at specific mints. For instance the San Francisco mint struck quarters in these years apparently from retired SMS dies.
