Is my 1966 1 Kopek coin worth anything?

Discussion in 'What's it Worth' started by cookiemonster12, Jul 14, 2010.

  1. I have a 1 kopek coin from 1966. It's in circulated condition, but still looks pretty new. On the back, where it says "KONEHKA", the "O" is hardly there. It can't be seen unless the coin is tilted and looked at in the light. It looks faded, almost. There are no signs of wear in that spot, or anywhere on the coin, really. What I want to know is if this is some sort of error, or if it was worn down over the years without me noticing?

Since it is a kopek, i guess it is Russian/Soviet? Got the letters CCCP on it? If so, its value is very low, i`d say less than 1$, especially worn. Maybe it is worth more according to the book, someone here will probably check for it.

Regarding the "O" letter, one can only guess without photographs of the actual coin. You`ll get a better answer if you provide some.

My guess is that your coin was struck with a grease-filled die. Makes it worth 1.0000001 times as much as if it were well struck.

Some of the modern Russian coins have been getting large premiums in recent years but it's mostly the larger denominations and only in uncirculated condition. The 1966 1 k is a somewhat better date but I doubt that it's worthy of much premium yet. It lists for $1 in unc and lower grades commonly appear in poundage.

I suspect that most of the old Soviet coins were melted back in the early '90's but have not seen confirmation yet. This has been the fate of almost all moderns; they end of in the furnace.
