Hey everyone, I just purchased this proof set from 1981. They look like type 1 but I can't tell. It may be worth grading these. I don't know if they will get a high grade or not. But, on PCGS some of the type 1's in high grades sell for quite a bit. I don't see any abrasions on their surfaces and they are eye-catching but I don't want to spend the money if it won't work out.

Welcome to the forum. ;) I wouldn't have it graded as it might be special to you, but not special to anyone else. The only coins I have graded are some that I eventually want to sell, otherwise no reason to grade. tmoney - Copy.gif

In PF-70, *some* of them do seem to sell for a lot. Cent and Nickel mainly. But The drop off below 70 is large (here's the difference with the cent):

I'd suggest leaving them as is. You'll spend $40+ a coin to have them graded.

Yes. The OP thinks his set are Type 1, so that's what I was going with.
Type 2 coins are more desirable. Here's the comparison:

Even if the desired type it’s not worth spending the money to grade it.

Welcome. These coins are unlikely to be worth the considerable expense of having them graded. Keep them as-is and enjoy them in the government holder.

Picking out coins that will grade 70 is really tough. Few have that skill. I know I don't.

I don’t even try to buy raw coins to grade as a MS-70.

Question, sort of related. It's hard to tell from the photos if the coins are type 1 or type 2. But my question is - is it possible for one proof set to contain both type 1 and type 2 mintmarks? Or will it for sure be one or the other?
