The dime in it's current form has been around for a really really long time and I think it's long overdue for a design change. The dime has remain unchanged since 1946 and now it's running 72 years in its current form and it may be the longest running unchanged coin design in US coin history, the front and back of the coin are identical to its original 1946 design and I think it's time for some change to this coin. When should we change the dime and what should replace its current design?
I'd would be all for a design change if it could be handed in a non-political way with whatever design being chosen solely on its artistic merits. Unfortunately, I've absolutely no confidence this could be achieved today.
We had 2 cent pieces with a shield and we had shield nickels so maybe they can do something based on that but give it a timeless classic design.
Lincoln cent 1909 been around 109 years Jefferson nickels 1938 been around 80 years Washington quarter 1932 been around 86 years And your point about the Roosevelt dime is ?
The Lincoln cent had a few reverse changes in its 109 years, the Washington quarter was unchanged for 66 years before it got to its current form and the Jefferson nickel was unchanged for 64 years before the changed the reverse and than changed the face portrait but the Rosevelt dime had no changes in its 72 years.
Is it time to change the dime design? Ever hear the saying - be careful what ya ask for ? They claim the answer to why that saying exist is because you just might get it - however, what you get may not be exactly what you want ! Look at the date on this thread - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/time-for-a-change-in-our-change.170/ Well, I started and ran that campaign before CT even existed. That was one of my earliest posts to this forum. By and large the campaign was successful, and it was the first time one ever was, there were several earlier campaigns like it that failed completely. I got Congress and the President to agree to change coin designs - and yeah, we got new coin designs alright. Problem was - all of them were atrocious ! And they didn't change all of them - which is what we wanted to begin with. That was over 15 years ago and here we are still asking the same question
Ok lets take the Jefferson nickel.....correct it was changed on the obv. Well fact is it was changed before it was even minted! Look it up Felix Schlag won the contest then afterwards his winning design was changed before it was minted. The modern changes to our 5 cent piece makes one of the founding fathers look like a Freak! Sad but true...but the coinage of this country is so unbecoming of a great nation.
I'm completely in favor of removing dead people from our coins. However, if you try to kill their sacred cow, angry mobs with pitchforks will rapidly descend upon you. I'll bet half the people in the country couldn't even tell you who FDR was or what he did or when he was president....
I think the obverse could use a change...I kinda like the reverse as it is. Having said that, I hope they don't do it the way they change the obverse on the nickel.
To be honest, I'm not sure what could be done with the dime. It has such a small area to be worked with without crowding the coin. I was actually surprised that so much was able to be done with the 2009 cents. But the new(er) Shield cent is atrocious. The Shield is bland and the loss of detail on the obverse is equally so. Do be careful what you wish for. On the other hand, the half dollar needs to be eliminated. It has no commercial use and IMHO is only still produced to off set the costs of the cent and nickel to balance the books every year. Duplication in the Proof Clad sets crossed over to the Silver Proof sets should also be eliminated. We do not need two sets of duplicate coins to try and get rid of the extra coins just to complete our sets. What might be interesting is a Proof set with all silver coins including the cent, nickel and dollar coins. It might restart coin collecting as we now know it and bring in a new generation of collectors. But I am rambling.
Should it be changed yes, will it be changed no. And yes we do need to be careful what we wish for as neither the 1c or 5c is better off from the changes they've endured. The westward nickels and 2009 1c were nice but what they are now is just embarrassing. What we really need to change first is the people selecting designs, once we’ve cleaned house there we can try and redesign or change the coins otherwise it’s just going to end up being even worse than before.
I would like to see a new effigy of Franklin Roosevelt on the Dime along with the other side showing soldiers holding up the US flag at Iwo Jima.
6 year old thread OP not seen since 2018 But here goes anyway US Treasury Award Medal 34.4 mm Silver 21 grams Picked mine from a Florida LCS junk box
And I'll be the same killjoy I always am, and point out that the quarter is the new cent. Yeah, I'd like to see new designs -- but for commerce, cents and nickels and dimes are just a waste of time and metal at this point.
The problem with the dime is that it's too small to really do something great with the design. Also inflation is rendering it almost worth less. Yes, this is nice, but they are not going to change it to anything like this.
As a matter of personal taste, I have always considered the Roosevelt dime to be a lot of "meh". And it's far too long in the tooth. But I fear that if the change was left up to the collective committee we would wind up with something even worse. Now, the No Stars Liberty Seated design shown below has everything that is necessary and nothing that is not and fits beautifully within the constrained canvas. A design that is similarly classic and simple would be to my taste. I guess the coinage laws now require "E Pluribus Unum" and "In God We Trust" on our coinage. A small "E Pluribus Unum" could be incorporated in the right obverse field, ala Lincoln Cents and a small "In God We Trust" could go under the reverse wreath. I would also like to see a step away from the low-relief designs of the previous decades.
