Is it the lighting or do these look cleaned?

Don't looked scrubbed to me, but hey, I'm still a newbie with Linc's.....

And photo-editing can (not sayin' this is the case on this one) work wonders....:smile

I think they have been cleaned in the past. I hope Dick will chime in here and give his response. he can give you an informative answer. it's hard totell though if there is luster on those coins or if its from the lighting (at least for me anyways )

I would say most definitely, they all look mid range grades (20-35) and he is listing them as XF/AU, and hoping they slide by without anyone noticing.
I say Cleaned.

 

id say cleaned based on the shading from top to bottom.

 

I just finished with a small collection of wheat cents like that. It's hard to tell if they were cleaned. But what is really wrong with them is that these cents were stored improperly and aquired a thin film of copper oxidation for the lack of better wordage. Yes I know. copper turns green but this film is almost like rust or just plain old dirt. If this film is removed the cent shows more wear.
And yes the lighting being used here is being used to enhance the apperance and hide what it realy looks like.
I agree with you that these are low grade cents with wear marks on them.
Too bad, they might have looked a lot better if they were stored properly.

 

I change my opinion. Those cents were cleaned. Specially on the obverses. The color differences under the word 'Liberty' and arond the dates are signs of cleaning.

 

I am no expert but it does look like they were cleaned halfheartedly a long time ago and have had the opportunity to start aging/toning again or they were scrubbed and then artificially toned ( like with cigarette smoke ).

Well, they have not been washed with acid, scrubbed with brillo or whizzed. In other words, there is no blatant evidence of cleaning, but thee is something wrong when the obverse and reverse are that different a color. That could be the way he photographs the coins, but...... What I can say is that his grading skills are non-existent.
