I'm finding you can see interesting things under the scope. Take this coin for example. Is there really an S to the north of the D partially into the 9? Or is this merely a case of the mind trying to make order out of chaos, trying to make an S out of a combination of light, shadow, damage to the 9, metal flow and die scratches?
IMO....no....if it was a S mintmark (that is what you are saying right??) it would show more IMO.... Speedy
Hi, I would be curious to know if it is a 1980 D dated piece. There is a 1980 D/S variety that looks like that. Bill
Hi, It's definitely different than the one that is in The Cherrypickers' guide. That coin has the S more toward the upper right of the D and a little closer to the 8. That doesnt mean there is anything wrong with the coin. It could be a new discovery of a D/S variety. If we see the same thing and the S you see is the same S that I see. I would send it to Ken Potter or John Wexler for a look see. with your permission, I can send your scan to them for a quick opinion. Bill
