Does this 2004 series $20 star note have any value? I read that this one in PPQ63 is worth around $50 Does this well circulated 20 have a premium? Too bad this one wasn't issued in Dallas, or NYC. It's a KC
Yeah, a spender. https://www.mycurrencycollection.com/reference/star-notes/lookup/20/2004/EJ01016566*
It depends on if you collect star notes for the sake of collecting them or if you collect for potential value. I occasionally catch a star note in circulation, but my observation is that unless it's a $1, there never seems to be much ROI to putting them away. I use the resources above but bumping a $20 to $21 isn't the same as bumping $1 to $2. It seems that you really have to catch one of the low run notes to make it worth it on larger denominations.
Yeah, I'm not much of a paper collector. I kinda figured that this one was a little to beat up. Thanks for the help folks.
Not sure where you read that. Maybe a special serial number or some other factor, but the one in your photo isn't anything special and I'd spend it (unless you collect star notes). Maybe one of our other currency experts can enlighten us. @SteveInTampa?
I save every star note I get, regardless of its condition. I have a few thousand dollars at face value of them. It’s a cheap easy way to save money. If they go up in all the years I keep them, that’s great. If not I’ll spend them.
Modern mid-grade star note have very little premium over face value, if any. If you collect strictly from circulation, you can squirrel it away until something nicer comes along.
